Humans need reasons. We need a sense of direction, or a feeling that at least something we’re doing has value.

“Life is never made unbearable by circumstances, but only by a lack of meaning and purpose…. Those who have a ‘why’ to live can bear with almost any ‘how’.” – Psychotherapist and Holocaust survivor Viktor Frankl

Existential health is a broad and somewhat philosophical concept that encompasses aspects of mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being. It often relates to finding meaning and purpose in life, feeling connected to oneself and others, and experiencing a sense of fulfillment and contentment.

So how can exercise contribute as a source of purpose?

  • Boosting Mood and Reducing Depression: Regular exercise has been shown to reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety, improving overall mental health. Engaging in physical activity releases endorphins, which are natural mood lifters. A study in the Journal of Sport and Exercise Psychology found that even moderate exercise can significantly improve mood and emotional well-being.
  • Building Resilience: Exercise helps build mental resilience by teaching individuals to push through physical challenges. This resilience can transfer to other areas of life, helping individuals cope better with stress and adversity.
  • Healthy Routine: Incorporating exercise into daily life establishes a healthy routine that promotes overall well-being. Consistency in physical activity can lead to better sleep, increased energy levels, and improved overall health.
  • Positive Habits: Engaging in regular exercise often encourages other positive lifestyle choices, such as healthy eating and sufficient rest, creating a holistic approach to well-being.

Practical Tips for Integrating Exercise into Existential Health

  1. Set Meaningful Goals: Establish fitness goals that align with your personal values and long-term health aspirations. These goals can provide a sense of purpose and motivation.
  2. Find Enjoyable Activities: Choose physical activities that are enjoyable and fulfilling. Whether it’s dancing, hiking, swimming, or playing a sport, finding joy in exercise enhances its positive impact on existential health.
  3. Create a Supportive Network: Join fitness groups, clubs, or classes to build social connections and a sense of community. Exercising with others can provide motivation, support, and a shared sense of accomplishment.
  4. Practice Mindfulness in Exercise: Incorporate mindfulness practices into physical activity. Focus on the present moment, the sensations in the body, and the rhythm of movement to enhance the mind-body connection.
  5. Reflect on Progress: Regularly reflect on fitness progress and achievements. Acknowledge the effort and dedication put into maintaining physical health, which can boost self-esteem and a sense of purpose.

By integrating these aspects, exercise becomes more than just a physical activity; it becomes a key component of existential health, contributing to a fulfilling and meaningful life. It certainly has to mine!
